In October 1966, Delta made its first launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base with a Delta-E carrying ESSA-3 to orbit. Six Delta E rockets deployed four ESSA weather satellites, the first Geodetic Earth Orbiting Satellite (GEOS) and the Pioneer 6 spacecraft. Thor 457 (64-17731)/Delta 34 – via L2 Historical, uploaded by Ed KyleĪn AJ10-118E powered the second stage and either a X258 or FW-4D motor was used as the third stage – with the rocket designated Delta-E or Delta-E1 respectively according to which one was flown.
